A Personal poetry anthology by the late John J Whitmarsh: The People's Poet 2002 title winner

EaglesComp

Magic Light: an artists view of the picture.

I sought through eagles eyes in flight
that mountain peak with cold still sight
and waited for approaching night
for one brief glimpse of magic light.

Thomas Moore

Forward by Paula Brown

John Whitmarsh was the first poet to be voted by his peers among The People's Poet global community as their favourite writer of the year. He was presented with “The People's Poet 2002” award at the launch party of The People's Poet Anthology 2003 in Bournemouth in November 2002.

This book has been a great pleasure to produce for John because he is joyfully enthusiastic around and fluent in the language of poetry. Unafraid of rhyme, meter and form and often straying into free verse and prose, his scope is broad and well executed. His correspondence is strewn playfully with poetic insights into whatever topic is in discussion and his commentary upon morality, politics and religion and his own mortality manages to retain its humane warmth.

I would like to close with one of John's verses. This was taken from a recent visit to London, to take in some galleries and museums. With such intellectual and artistic stimulation, it is little wonder that he felt compelled to write but it is a perfect illustration of how John perceives the World when you consider his choice of subject.

Enjoy the way that John immortalises this woman with his amusement and perception and note that there is not a scrap of judgement laid upon her for her choice of attire.

Parliament Square

PVC hardly covering
Parts the sun seldom sees;
Heads turn,
But the moment passes
As she walks
Beyond the trees.
No government
Attracts attention
Like the scant-dressed woman there.
No legislation
So well remembered
As skin uncovered and
Flesh so bare.
